Case story

An unsophisticated man Mr Upen Saharia aged 43 years old. He lives in village Satguria under the Sipajhar block of Darrang district in Indian state Assam. The village is about 90 K.M. away from Guwahati, where Mission for Vision partner hospital Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya is situated. All through the village is closed to the Siphajhar town still he is belonging to poor condition. He is allied agriculture labour. Every single day he goes to this work for an end meet for his family. They are five family members. All the responsibility is up to him. His wife is maintaining household chores as well as she is busy with cattle care. And his old parents keep the house protected and take care of his daughter. These are their life.


Thereupon last year, he had appeared to be in jeopardy. Because of his eyesight, he was not able to cut the bamboo, bamboo fencing is most important to protect paddy fields from cattle. One day while he was cutting bamboo for fencing, he cut his finger. That moment was so frightful. Besides those, he could not see the road clearly while walking and bump into a path hole. He could not guide his daughter during reading. He always used to return home before it was dark.

Other hand he felt difficulty to go his work, he did irregularity his work so his owner engaged another person for his substitute and reduced his payment. Due to decreasing payment, he faced lots of difficulties nourishing his family. He shared his anguish with his wife. Then sometimes his wife helped with his activity. How many days would go like that because she had also to do a household chore? After a few days, they plan to treat him but due to money constraints, it did not happen. They could not visit a private hospital for treatment, they were so depressed psychologically.

They had been thinking about what would happen in their life but one day fortunately the owner informed them that there was a vision centre in Mongaldai run by Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya, Guwahati. From that centre, anyone can avail of health services at an affordable price. The following day they visited at Vision centre. He was examined and identified as a bilateral cataract patient. The vision centre's staff counselled him and advised him to visit next week for cataract surgery with necessary documents. They came back home and pray to God that everything would be passed effortlessly. After a week he reached the centre and subsequently he had been carried to the base hospital by hospital vehicle. He was so happy that everything was free of cost. He was operated on in his right eye and returned home. He can see with his operated eye so he and his entire family members were happy. Now he resumes his work and his owner abolishes his substitute and started to pay him full payment. His life has started to move in a positive direction.

They convey their gratitude to the entire team of the centre and hospital for the support. Now it is a farming season, once it will over, he plans to operate another eye.
