Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya, was established on 14th October 1994 in a small donated building, with the aim of functioning as a modern eye care hospital with all facilities to serve the people of the Northeast. As the demand and need for expansion of its services grew manifold over the years, a new building of its own was constructed and the Hospital was shifted to the new building premises on 26th October 2001. The Hospital has constantly grown and evolved over the years, adapting itself to the needs of the times. From seemingly humble beginnings, Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya has grown into a Tertiary Eye Care Institute and a Centre of Excellence in the North East. As of today, Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya has 3 main units:


   Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya Main Hospital;
   Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya Institute of Ophthalmology; and
   Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya Institute of Community Ophthalmology


Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya Main Hospital


   The Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya Main Hospital is the oldest of the three and covers a total built up area of 84000 sq. ft. spread out over 4 floors and a Basement. The Main Building houses the Administrative Block, Reception Area, Out Patient Departments, Day Care Unit (Ward), Operation Theatres (OT), Investigation Area, Isolation Rooms, Library, Lecture Hall, Medical Store, Optical Dispensing Outlet, Pharmacy, Maintenance Department, Canteen, Creche area, Telephone Operator cum Travel Desk and the Staff lockers, Changing rooms and Time Office. Most of the building area is air conditioned.

Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya Main Building and Institute of Ophthalmology Building


   The Reception Area in the Main Building has 5 dedicated counters for Patient Service, and has a seating capacity of about 100 persons at a time.
   The Main Building houses 4 Out Patient Departments with a total seating capacity of around 350 persons. Of these, one serves as both Community and Emergency OPD; one is a dedicated Specialty clinic; and the remaining two serve as Comprehensive Out Patient Departments.
   20 Patient workup rooms and 18 Consultant workup rooms are incorporated in the OPD areas.
   After the outbreak of COVID -19, Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya has also incorporated 2 Isolation Rooms in its OPD area to adapt to the prevalent safety protocols.
   The OPDs are complimented by a fully equipped Investigations Wing that has a total seating capacity of 135.
   The Day Care Unit (Ward) in the Main Hospital has a total of 47 general beds, 3 AC Cabins, 6 Day Care Cabin & 10 Community beds. The waiting area of the Ward has a maximum seating capacity of 65.
   The Main Building of Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya houses 8 state-of-the-art Operation Theatres that cover a total carpet area of 9089 sq. ft., including an Intensive Care Recovery Unit with an intake capacity of 12 patients at a time.
   The Building also house 2 Septic and Minor Operation Theatres in the lower floors.
   The Main Building also houses a Lecture Hall with a seating capacity of about 150 persons. This hall is fully equipped with adequate Audio-Visual system and a Digital Multimedia setup.
   The Library in the Main Building houses nearly 800 books and 18 published Journals for the perusal of the Hospital’s consultants, DNB students, Optometrists and Interns. It also boasts an e-library that can be accessed by the designated login IDs. Several recorded case studies in CD format are also housed in the Library.


Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya Institute of Ophthalmology


   Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya Institute of Ophthalmology was set up in the year 2009 to cater to the growing necessity for expansion in the services provided by Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya. A 6 storeyed building, the Institute of Ophthalmology covers a total built up area of 64000 sq. ft. and houses a Reception Area; Out Patient Departments (OPD); Pediatric Ophthalmology Clinic; LASIK Clinic; Laboratories, Eye Bank; Academics Department; Bio Medical department; Projrct Research and Clinical Training offices; Classrooms; Sterile Procedure Areas; Multipurpose Hall; Auditorium cum Function Hall; Conference Room; Medical Records Department (MRD); Optical Dispensing Outlet; Call Centre and IT Services Department. Most of the areas of the building are air conditioned.


   The Reception Area in the Building has 2 counters for Patient Service, and has a seating capacity of around 80 persons.
   The Institute of Ophthalmology Building houses 4 more Specialty Out Patient Departments including the Pediatric OPD, with a total seating capacity of 360.
   This building has 2 dedicated Sterile Procedure Areas, including the LASIK Clinic Sterile Procedure Area, covering a carpet area of 3550 sq. ft.

   The Academic Wing of Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya is also located in the Institute of Ophthalmology Building and takes up an entire floor. It houses the Academic offices, Faculty rooms, of the Institute as well as 5 Classrooms with a seating capacity of 100.
   This building also houses a fully functional Auditorium cum Function Hall capable of seating around 300 persons at a time. It is equipped with a top of the line Sound System and Professional Audio-Video Arrangements are in place for all sorts of functions.
   The building houses a Multipurpose Hall, namedthe ‘Hall of Humility, Honor and Virtue’, for conferences, staff meetings, training sessions. Moreover, it is equipped with an interactive ‘Smart TV Panel’ system which is used to conduct online training sessions for our Vision Center staff over a Digital Multimedia Platform.
   The Building also houses other auxiliary departments like the IT Department and Call Centre.


Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya Institute of Community Ophthalmology


   The Institute of Community Ophthalmology is the off-campus wing of Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya. Situated about 900 meters away from the main hospital, it covers a total built up area of 32000 sq. ft. The building houses a Dormitory for Community patients; Post-operation check-up rooms; administrative offices for the Community Department; Conference Room; Doctors’ Hostel; Dining Halls and a modern Kitchen.


   The Community Dormitory has 64 beds for the Community Patients with proper segregation for Male and Female Patients. It consists of 2 dining areas (for incoming and outgoing community patients).
   The Dormitory is supported by a fully equipped Kitchen that follows strict hygiene standards.

Institute of Community Ophthalmology Building

   The Institute of Community Ophthalmology Building also houses a post – operative check up room wherein the operated community patients are reviewed.
   One floor of the building houses the offices of the Community Department and a conference room, meant for Community meetings, Health Worker training sessions etc.
   The building also houses a hostel for Doctors, comprising of 18 furnished rooms as well as 1 Guest room for visitors.


Patient OPD and Dormitory

   For the smooth flow of operations in all of these units of Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya, various infrastructural support services are in place. The IT and the Engineering departments play a key role in this regard and their contributions go a long way in ensuring that the Hospital services never falters.



   All together Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya has a total of 1,53,400 sq ft area for public use.
   All three buildings have been installed with a centralized CCTV Surveillance system with an ample backup of 7 days. The system is regularly monitored from and by the IT department.
   A total of 6 elevators are in use for the facility of the patients and their attendants – 2 in the Main Building; 3 in the Institute of Ophthalmology; and 1 in the Community Institute of Ophthalmology
   The Main building of the Hospital is equipped with 15 Aquaguard Systems for supplying pure drinking water to all the departments of the Hospital.
   A total of 3 Bore Wells (5 horsepower each) are in place for the water requirements of all three buildings (2 in campus; 1 in the Institute of Community Ophthalmology).


Power Backup provisions


   The Operation Theatres in the Main Building and the Institute of Ophthalmology are backed up by 5 Online UPS systems (on hot standby) of which, 2 (30 kVA each) are used in the Main Building Operation Theatres and 3 (5 kVA each) are used in the Sterile Procedure Areas in the Institute of Ophthalmology Building.
   The Main Building is also equipped with 2 online inverters with a capacity of 2.2 kVA each. (1 for the Day Care Unit; 1 for the Basement area)
   The Hospital is installed with Electrical Control panels with high tension breakers with online tap changers and 2 Transformers of 1000 kVA (Main Building) and 630 KVA (Institute of Ophthalmology)

   A manually operated Main LT panel with 1600 amps circuit breaker has been installed at the Main Building, which receives power from the generators and transformers and distributes the same to various electronic devices and distribution boards in the Hospital. It is accompanied by an 11 KV LT breaker.


   The Institute of Ophthalmology Building is equipped with an AMF Panel (Automatic Mains Failure Panel) that automaticallymakes the power switch to the emergency standby generators in the event of a significant loss of mains power or total blackout.

   To accommodate for any electrical power outages, the Hospital is installed with 3 Diesel Gensets. The Main Building and Institute of Ophthalmology are both connected with 500 kVA capacity power backup and have 380 kVA for standby purpose. Institute of Community Ophthalmology has a power backup of 50 kVA. All together the Hospital has the capacity to provide power backup of up to 930 kVA.


   Moreover, in accordance with its ‘go green’ initiative, Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya boasts a Solar Power System that provides a total energy backup of 80 Kwp (30Kwp for the Main Building; 50 Kwp for the Institute of Ophthalmology).

Waste Management -


   The Hospital has a Bio-medical & General waste system installed that adheres to all the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) norms.

   The Hospital is equipped with 3 Water Treatment Plants in its premises, each having the capacity to treat 5000 liters of water per hour. These treatment plants treat the untreated wastewater generated by the hospital. Once treated, this water is reused for gardening and car washing in the Hospital.

Fire Safety -


   A Fire pump house, compliant of all Fire & Safety norms, is housed in the main building. The pump house holds a total capacity of 1 lakh liters water in fire safety water tanks, along with all necessary fire-fighting equipment like fire hydrant system is installed in the Main building.

   All buildings have fire detectors, water sprinklers, water hose reels installed.

   Electronic fire panel indicators and a Central fire alarm system are in place for the entire Hospital.

   128 independent Fire Extinguishers are also placed at strategic locations in each of the buildings (69 in the Main Building, 27 in the Institute of Ophthalmology and 32 in the Institute of Community Ophthalmology).

For Air conditioning purposes -


   For the purpose of Central Air Conditioning, the Hospital has installed 3 Central Chiller Plants (2 in the Main Building; 1 in the Institute of Ophthalmology). The plants have a total capacity of 375 TR (TR – Ton of Refrigeration)

   The Air Conditioning system of the Hospital is aided by 36 Air Handling Units (AHU) -13 in the Main Building; 23 in the Institute of Ophthalmology, which are used to re-condition and circulate air as part of a heating, ventilating and air-conditioning system. The AHU takes in the outside air, re-conditions it and supplies it as fresh air to the Hospital buildings.

   The Institute of Ophthalmology also utilizes 13 Fan Coil Units for the purpose of interior cooling.

   Besides the Central Air Conditioning systems, the Hospital also makes use of 42 Split Air Conditioners, having a capacity of 1.5 TR each, in different areas (33 in the Main Building; 9 in the Institute of Ophthalmology).

   8 Cassette type air conditioning systems (4 TR capacity each) and 3 Ductable air conditioning systems (installed in the Day Care Unit) are also in use in the Main Building of the Hospital.


For the Medical Gas Pipeline System -


   The Main Building is equipped with 1 Medical Air Compressor of capacity 10 hp. The Medical air compressor is used to supply clean air to patients under sedation. It is mainly used for the patients in the Operation Theatres.

   The Main Building is also equipped with 2 Medical Vacuum Systems of 10 horsepower each (1 on standby). Medical vacuum systems are fundamental for delivering vacuum pressure for aspiration and ensuring that both patient rooms and surgery rooms are safe and efficient. It is also important for the sterilization of medical equipment.

   The Main Building of the Hospital houses a Manifold Room connected with a Medical Gas Pipeline system which supplies medical gases to the necessary departments as and when required. The room has an emergency line attached and is used to supply an uninterrupted flow of medical gas to the facility pipeline system. The manifolds can be used to supply oxygen, medical air, carbon dioxide, or nitrogen to power many medical systems and operations.
