   India currently has the highest number of visually impaired and blind people and according to experts majority of cases is because of cataract. It is the sole largest factor for blindness in India and accounts for nearly 63 per cent of the total vision impairment in the country.

   Assam has the highest instance of blindness in the country followed by Arunachal Pradesh. This was revealed at the 14th annual conference of VISION 2020: The Right to Sight.

   According to the Rapid Assessment of Avoidable Blindness Survey 2003, the prevalence of blindness in Assam is 3.05 per cent and 2.28 per cent in Arunachal Pradesh. As per the National Programme for Control of Blindness, the prevalence of blindness in the country was 1.1 per cent in 2001-02 and 1 per cent in 2006-07.

   Since year 2020, due to Covid-19 pandemic, along with the whole world Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya has also suffered. We are still in the mode of recovery both emotionally and financially. This pandemic has affected us hard. Our expenditures have increased, income has reduced, opportunities are lost, risk has increased and future uncertain. Under these circumstances we seek public support to fight against the odds in our endeavor to eradicate preventable blindness.
