COMPREHENSIVE EYE CHECK UP

The Human Eye primarily comprises of two main segments that are required for Medical Examination. These segments are named the Anterior Segment and the Posterior Segment.

The Anterior Segment is the front third of the eye that includes the structures in front of the Vitreous Humour: namely, the Cornea, Iris, Ciliary Body, and Lens. The Posterior Segment or posterior cavity is the back two-thirds of the eye that includes the anterior hyaloid membrane and all of the optical structures behind it: the Vitreous Humor, Retina, Choroid, and Optic Nerve.

A Comprehensive Eye Examination at Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya focuses on the thorough check-up of all the components of these two segments of the Eye. Unlike other institutions, where a piecemeal approach is prevalent, the Comprehensive Eye Examination done at Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya adheres to International standards of Procedure and Protocol wherein, a thorough eye examination is carried out, covering all aspects of a patient’s eye health.

Every fresh patient that visits the Hospital for an Eye check-up is charged a ‘one-time’ initial consulting fee which covers the Registration fee; Consultancy charge; and the charge for all the other Diagnostic equipments involved in the examination. This is quite unlike other institutions where the patient is required to pay for services at almost each and every counter from the moment he/she steps in. This registration, under the initial fee, remains valid for 1 month during which period; no additional charges are taken from the patient for any diagnostic tests.

Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya makes a conscious effort in all its activities to remain as environment friendly as possible. As such, ‘going paperless’ is one of its primary mottos. The Hospital makes use of a very efficient and user friendly computer interface for the smooth running of its operations. A dedicated ‘Hospital Management System’, designed and developed by TATA Consultancy Services, is used in all the Hospital desks, to be used by the Health Care Assisstants and Secretaries in all the departments. This software is directly linked with the ‘Electronic Medical Records’ interface, which is the software that is used by the all the Doctors and Clinical Technicians. Whenever a patient completes his/her registration with us, a digital file of the patient is created in the Hospital Management System and a Medical Records number is generated which is unique to that particular patient. All records, including patient medical history, clinical advice, medical prescriptions etc. are stored under this file. This ensures that the patient’s clinical details are digitally preserved and can be accessed by the Doctors, whenever the patient visits the Hospital.

Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya is equipped with the latest, state-of-the-art Infrastructure necessary in providing the highest quality Eye care to all its patients.
A brief summary of the equipment utilized in a Comprehensive Eye Examination at Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya is listed below:

1. Refractive Correction (including Retinoscopy and Autorefractometry)
Refractive error is a common eye disorder which occurs when the eye cannot clearly focus the images from the outside world. The result of refractive errors is blurred vision, which is sometimes so severe that it causes visual impairment. Refractive error is a problem with focusing light accurately on the retina due to the shape of the eye or cornea. The most common types of refractive error are near-sightedness, far-sightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia.
Retinoscopy is an examination of the retina that provides an objective measurement of refractive error. The procedure is performed by an optometrist during an eye exam to determine if a patient has emmetropia, myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) or astigmatism. An Autorefractor or Automated Refractor is a computer-controlled machine used during an eye examination to provide an objective measurement of a person's refractive error and prescription for glasses or contact lenses. This is achieved by measuring how light is changed as it enters a person's eye.

2. Intra-ocular Pressure Measurement (with Non-contact Tonometry and Applanation Tonometry) Intraocular pressure (IOP) is the fluid pressure inside the eye. Tonometry is the method eye care professionals use to determine this. IOP is an important aspect in the evaluation of patients at risk of glaucoma.

3. Gonioscopy is a painless exam that the ophthalmologist uses to check a part of the eye called the drainage angle. This area is at the front of the eye between the iris and the cornea. It is where fluid called aqueous humor naturally drains out of the eye.

4. Slit Lamp Examination (examination of Ocular and Adnexal Structures) The Slit Lamp Examination also called Biomicroscopy, allows the doctor to microscopically examine the patient’s eyes for any abnormalities or problems.

5. Indirect Ophthalmoscopy The Indirect Ophthalmoscope is an optical instrument that is worn on the examiner's head and sometimes attached to spectacles. It is used to inspect the fundus or back of the eye. It produces a stereoscopic image with between 2x and 5x magnification.
