Eicher Driver Care Program - From Aug. 2020

On August, 2020, Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya, in collaboration with Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital (SCEH), New Delhi, and Eicher Motors India Ltd. launched a project titled EICHER DRIVER CARE PROGAM. This Program is a national level intervention with a focus to improve accessibility of affordable quality eye and ear healthcare services among truck drivers at major transport areas. This program is a combination of both awareness activities and quality eye and ear healthcare services, which would help to improve better eye and ear healthcare practice among truck drivers and the transport community. This program aims at motivating the truck drivers for regular eye and ear screening and to follow better eye and ear healthcare practices to maintain their appropriate visual acuity and hearing ability in order to ensure safe driving and road safety.

In this regard, an Eicher Mobile Van, fully equipped with all major and necessary equipments for comprehensive eye and ear screening and spectacle fitting, was provided to SSDN by Eicher Motors India Ltd. A team comprising of 2 Optometrists, 1 Coordinator, Health Workers, 1 Optical technician and the designated Driver would set out every day to specific prearranged locations at major transport hubs along the national highway and conduct comprehensive eye and ear screening camps for truck drivers and the transport community.

Goal of Eicher Driver Care Program To provide accessibility of affordable and advanced quality primary eye and ear healthcare services to 10000 truck drivers per year at major transport hubs along the national highway routes across the North East to support and promote road safety and safe driving.

Objectives
To generate awareness about better eye and ear healthcare practices among the truck drivers in each project location.
To provide accessibility of quality primary eye and ear care services to the truck drivers and transport community through centre, mobile van and outreach camps.
Establish effective referral system for eye and ear healthcare, blood pressure and diabetic patients.
To establish effective networking with various stakeholders of transport community towards better eye and ear healthcare of drivers.
To ensure improved road safety among the truck drivers and the transport community.

Impact of Eicher Driver Care Program It was unfortunate that the launch of this ambitious Program coincided with the outbreak of the Coronavirus Pandemic and as a result its initial implementation had to be stalled for a brief period. However, despite all odds, the SSDN team successfully launched the Project, fearlessly moving ahead with the help of its Program Partners. The outreach camps were carried out with full force with strict COVID – 19 protocols in place. The outreach team was provided with PPE Kits, Face Shields, Sanitizers, Masks, Gloves and other hygiene amenities, and regular inspection was carried out to check if hygiene standards and safety protocols were being maintained at all times.

Till date a total of 107 camps have been successfully conducted where 2487 persons have been screened, out of which, 1374 persons are truck drivers, and 412 spectacles have been dispensed on the spot at very low prices.
